BGE Curriculum

The Broad General Education (BGE) begins in Early Learning and Childcare (Age 3) and continues until the end of S3. The BGE is designed to provide breadth and depth of education to develop skills and abilities of the learner to prepare for their future. During the BGE, learners should:

·         Achieve the highest possible levels of literacy, numeracy and cognitive skills

·         Develop skills for life, learning and work

·         Experience challenge and success so that they can develop well-informed views while meeting the four capacities

·         Develop knowledge and understanding of society, the World and Scotland's place in it.

There are eight curricular areas within the BGE. Learners develop knowledge, skills and attributes of the four capacities by planned learning using the national experiences and outcomes.

Curriculum for Excellence contains benchmarks within each curricular area that set out clear statements of what learners need to know to achieve a level. Learners work at a pace which is suitable to their ability and ensures progression. Exemplified below are typical levels of progress within the BGE, however learners experience individualised pathways for themselves.
